Discover

Discover

After a Discover meeting, families will leave having a plan intact for the remainder of their son/daughter’s high school career. This plan will include course selection, assistance with planning their involvement in extracurriculars, a standardized test prep and test plan, and pre-college admission questions answered. It is important to start planning for college early. An ideal time to have a Discover meeting is during the 9th or 10th grade. The meeting will give families the first steps in the college planning process.

Discover U

After Discover U meetings (two meetings total), the 11th or 12th grade student and parents will have a better understanding of how to seek out a college that matches their preferences. With the completion of questionnaires and assessments from the family, a meeting discussing these results will allow for a list of colleges to be created that best fit the students’ needs, both academically and personally. In the second meeting, an extensive college list is shared with the family. Discussion about why each college is on the list is explained. In addition to the college list, information relating to the importance of college visits is explained.

After an Academic & Extracurricular Resume Building Meeting, the student will have completed a resume they will submit to all the colleges they plan on applying to. The resume has become an important piece of the admissions decision. Some items included on the resume are: extracurricular activities, community service, work experience, summer experience, honors and awards and hobbies. Often times students are unsure what to record. This meeting will help them to understand what they should and should not be putting on a resume. Colleges are often seeking out students who show initiative and commitment. It is the resume where students have an opportunity to present this.

After a College Essay Brainstorming meeting, the student will have a better understanding of what they should be writing about for up to two college essays. A college admission essay is unlike any other writing a student has done in high school. This is an opportunity to learn about the student outside from the application and transcript. In this brainstorming session, students are provided with exercises to allow them to discuss experiences that could lead to the perfect college essay.

A College Essay Critique is an optional meeting. Students can submit their college essays or meet to review and receive constructive and grammatical assistance.

After an Application Organizer is created for a student, they are now ready and have a checklist of material in the application process. The organizer will provide specific detail into what each college requires (i.e. main essay, supplemental essays, application type, application deadlines, teacher recommendations). All of the colleges that the student is planning to apply to will appear on the Application Organizer (up to 10 colleges).

Application Reviews are the final step in the application process. Once a student has completed the application and before they submit, a review of the application(s) is completed for any typos or missed information.

Finally, after a Decision Making meeting, the student will be better equipped to decide which college is best suited for them. This meeting discusses the benefits of each college the student was accepted to, how each college fits or does not fit his/her academic and personal preferences, and financial options.

**In addition to these meeting and options, services can be customized based on what the family is in need of assistance with. All services can be facilitated via Skype.
